MERFOLK

under da sea

These creatures are what you often see in old myths or legends. Though they are often referred to as mermaids, they can in fact be male and female. They live in kingdoms deep in the ocean. They aren't particularly dangerous, but they aren't exactly harmless either. They have about the same lifespan as a healthy human and will typically live to be about one hundred to one hundred and fifteen.

» APPEARANCE.

» Human --//
This form is self-explanatory, the merfolk are typically very natural looking, but very beautiful. They look like those models you always see posed on the beach with no make up on and their hair is perfect beach waves and shit, like it's really magical how good they look even just after swimming up out of the ocean. Same goes for the males.

» True form --//

This form is the one merfolk primarily use when in their natural habitats. They will form scaley fish tails form the middle of their waist down, Sometimes they will have fins on their backs and hips, but it really varies with each individual. They can come in any color you can imagine, they can be any pattern under the sun, much like fish.

» BEHAVIOR.

» Merfolk tend to live in small undersea cities, but occasionally they will abandon their underwater world for something more. Merfolk are often very curious about the human world above them, however it is whispered among them that the human world would be much too dangerous for them. Some choose to believe that warning and others ignore it, figuring they must have been given the ability to shift their tails into legs for a reason. They ways of scaring the younger merfolk into staying submerged are dying out as more and more move towards the surface and seem to be fine.

There really isn't a pattern with merfolk as far as living conditions go. They tend to be much more human with their lifestyles, it varies so greatly from one to the next. Merfolk, however, must live somewhere with easy access to the ocean or some body of water where they have easy access to it.

» POWERS AND ABILITIES.

» Hydrokinesis --/
These creatures have moderate hydrokinesis abilities. They can make decent sized waves, however they cannot generate water on their own, they must make use of whatever water is around them.
» Underwater Perception --/
The merfolk all have amazing awareness under the water. They know where things are, they can see exceptionally well, and very, very rarely get disoriented underwater and are much more comfortable there.
» Water Breathing --/
They can breathe underwater through gills on their necks.
» Strong Swimmers --/
They are very strong, very fast swimmers.
» Gifted Singers --/
They can sing as well as a siren, their song will entrance people to a lesser degree, it more or less glamours them, but merfolk do not eat people so they typically just do this for other reasons or to just show off.
» Marine Linguistics --/
They can speak to and understand marine life around them.
» Telepathy --/
They can also read minds of those around them without mental blocks.

» WEAKNESSES.

» Nets --/
They will have the same reaction as sirens when put in nets. It is a very distressing situation for them and they will panic so much that they will rarely be able to find a way out.
» Siren Songs --/
They are affected just as strongly by these songs as any other.
» Really Cold or Really Hot Water --/
These extremes can be fatal for a merfolk, extreme cold can slow them down in the water which will make breathing much more difficult for them. Extremely hot water can overheat their brains, but we're talking like temperatures for boiling.
» Fire --/
They will dry up in the presence of great heat, and fire will burn them to death almost certainly every time unless they can get to water within a few moments of being set ablaze.
» Felines --/
They hate cats and will almost always become extremely anxious and aggressive around them.

SIRENS

just follow the sound of my voice

Sirens are often known for their beautiful singing and the entrancing properties of their voices. Anyone who knows about sirens, though, will tell you that hearing their voice is a death sentence and no matter how beautiful it may be, you’d be wise not to listen.

» APPEARANCE.
Sirens have three forms. They can switch at will and sometimes do with no warning.
» Human --//

This form is self-explanatory, while in this form a siren cannot use their powers without slowly starting to reveal the more appealing of their two forms. The transformation is gradual but once the siren knows the victim is entranced they can speed it up. They can sing without using their powers, it’s a conscious switch made in the mind.

» Appealing true form --//

It starts with small patches of scales, their eyes become hypnotic to look at, a deadly combination with their voices. Their scales continue to cover their body, faintly above the waist and below the waist a tail can be formed if the siren so chooses, or the feet may web if they just need a quick boost for swimming.

» True form --//

This form is normally held off until the victim is totally entranced, the siren suddenly changes, their eyes go feral, animalistic as their teeth become pointed, their mouth like that of a shark. Their whole body changes, becoming very unpleasant to the eye and something to fear.

****Sirens are only female. To reproduce they must lure a victim in to impregnate them, the child will always be a female and the siren gene is so strong that it will overwhelm anything except demon seed. Sirens can only be born, not created.

» BEHAVIOR.

» Sirens tend to make their homes near the beaches, near oceans and large lakes, anywhere near a body of water that can keep then from drying out too much. Sirens are incredibly fond of the water and are often seen lingering near the water or in the water. They sometimes choose to live alone, but they are also seen living in large groups, sometimes familial, other times not, called harems. Harems typically have a head siren, but sometimes they are just groups of sirens living together in close quarters and they all just kinda do what they want. They usually hunt alone, finding it easier to lure prey on their own, however they do sometimes hunt in small groups. Most males or humans are put off by large groups of singing women. That's also the thing, see, sirens eat people. It might sound gruesome, but that's just a way of life for them.

Sirens are typically very vain and tend to focus on their looks without really being able to look at them without special enchanted mirrors. They might ask how they look more frequently than necessary, mainly because they can't look for themselves. They are incredibly long lived, the more people they eat the longer they live, it’s almost as if they consume the life forces of their prey and add it onto their own.

» STRENGTHS.

» Inhuman Strength --/
Sirens are incredibly strong, this comes in handy when trying to wrestle prey into submission and tearing them into small bite sized pieces.

» Siren Song --/
Sirens have a hypnotic voice, once under their spell they can influence you to do just about anything.
**note: They cannot target one person out of a group with this spell of theirs. Anyone that is thereby in the vicinity and comes upon to hear their voice will in turn be affected.

» The Screech --/
A deafening screech that will leave people disoriented and weak, can even burst ear drums.

» Hydrokinesis --/
Sirens have a slight control over water, the older they are the better it is.

» Water Breathers and Master Swimmers --/
Sirens can breathe under water and are extremely good swimmers.

» Attractive --/
They are very physically attractive to lure in prey, much like vampires.

» Quick Healers --/
They heal slightly faster than humans, even faster if in water.

» WEAKNESSES.

» Bronze --/
This will cause them to feel physically ill and if the exposure is prolonged it can make them extremely sick and weaken their powers. Wounds made with bronze will heal more slowly and scar.

» Mirrors --/
If you show a Siren a mirror it will see it’s true face and normally this will derail any train of thought or plan of attack the siren has. They are incredibly vain creatures and do not like seeing their true face. This goes for mirrors only, other reflective surfaces are generally fine.

» Heat --/
Extreme heat will dry out a siren, they are much more sensitive to the heat and it dries their skin rapidly.

» Mental Blocks --/
Faeries, Demons, Psychics, and Vampires are mostly immune to the siren song, though the psychics and faeries must be fairly experienced to block out the songs.

» Water Dwellers --/
Sirens must have access to salt water, as going too long without salt water will cause them to start drying up, much like what happens if exposed to heat. They can normally go about a month or so without water, though most of them don’t stay away that long.

» Nets --/
Nets make them incredibly uneasy and if you net them they go into an all-out panic.

SELKIES

you're getting under my skin

These are mysterious creatures who live in northern waters near the shores of Ireland and other northern seaside countries. They are not wereseals, they are not shape shifters, if anything they are quite literally skin walkers. Or swimmers.

» APPEARANCE.

» Human --//
The human form of a selkie is said to be very beautiful. They usually have long hair, dark eyes and dark hair, however they are known to have blonde hair or any other color that can naturally occur in a human. Same for the eyes.

» True form --//
Selkies naturally occur as seals. They aren't any bigger than normal seals, they really are hard to pick out amongst a line up of seals. Their coat colors can vary depending on where they are from and the natural presentation of seals there.

» BEHAVIOR.

» Selkies tend to live in large groups, though the groups may be spread out over a very sizable territory so the group tends to break down into smaller familial groups that will usually stay together for life. There are selkies who prefer life as a solitary creature and there are also those that move out of the natural selkie habitat altogether to live amongst the humans. Selkies are very playful and curious creatures, though that does not mean they won't occasionally act aggressively towards others.

There diets in the wild largely consist of the same types of foods that normal seals would eat. Lots of fish, perhaps penguins for the leopard seal selkie, it largely depends on their location. They have relatively normal lifespans, they live to be around 90-100 or a few years more and then they pass.

Selkies remain as their seal form, their natural form, up until puberty. Around puberty the selkie will gain the ability to slip out of, or shed, their seal skin. This might sound like a gruesome process, but it's largely painless and relatively easy. The selkie simply peel out of their skin, typically around the mouth area, for some reason it will stretch there only during this process to allow them to shimmy it over their body.

The problem with this method is that they are left with the skin. They will not grow another skin, the skin they are born with is the only skin they will ever have so they have to keep up with it. While it's off it will not rot, it will simply be like a weird piece of clothing. One that the selkie should guard with its life because if someone were to get a hold of that skin the selkie would be force to bend to every whim of the one holding it. Many men and women have used that trick in the past to secure themselves selkie husbands and wives. If a selkie loses their skin they are stuck in their human form until they can get it back.

» POWERS AND ABILITIES.

» Shedding --/
This is the process in which selkies shift. They shed out of their skin to become human and then slip back into it to become a seal again. They gain this ability around puberty.

» Cryokinesis --/
They are not able to manipulate water, however they can freeze it and manipulate and generate ice.

» Water Breathing --/
They can breathe under water.

» Resistant to the Cold --/
They can live in very frigid temperatures and swim in freezing water with no really big issue or side affects as long as they are in their seal form.

» Telepathy --/
They can read the minds of those without mental blocks.

» Strong Swimmers --/
They can swim extremely well, though they aren't the fastest.

» Glamouring --/
They can put people in a weak sort of trance like state, they have to be making eye contact for this to work though.

» WEAKNESSES.

» Heat --/
This can make them very sick and if it's hot enough it can also kill them. They were made to live in the cold and aren't very adapted to the other side.

» Their Skin --/
If someone were to get their skin they would have complete control over the selkie. They would be forced to bend to every whim the one who holds their skin has. They are stuck as humans if their skin is taken and will not grow another one.

» Mortal --/
There is nothing especially hardy about them other than their ability to withstand cold temperatures. They can be killed the same way any mortal can and can get sick just as any human could.

NIXES

come on in, the water's fine

Nixes or nixies or necks as they are sometimes called are very interesting water dwellers. They are essentially merfolk with a few very neat abilities to set them apart from the others. These creatures are said to have originated with a man who was desperate for a wife and struck a deal with a demon for certain powers to win over the woman, the deal encompassed a few others once they caught wind of what the man was doing. There was soon a decent sized group of these creatures and all nix can be traced back to any one or two of the nixes of the past.

» APPEARANCE.

» Water Form --//
This form is a form unique to the nix. They can shift into a medium sized pond at the largest, but it will be a natural looking pond that looks like it has been there for years. There is no way to tell the difference until you get into the water.

» Human Form --//
They tend to be very earthy and natural looking in this form, but still incredibly easy on the eyes. Nix tend to be very lean as well, and usually tall. They might have certain qualities about them that make them look just a little bit unnatural, but for the most part there is not really any sure fire way to tell the difference between a nix and a human.

» True form --//
This form is the one nix primarily use when in their natural habitats. They will form scaley fish tails form the middle of their waist down, Sometimes they will have fins on their backs and hips, but it really varies with each individual. They can come in any color you can imagine, they can be any pattern under the sun, much like fish.

» BEHAVIOR.

» These creatures typically live alone, or with their hostages. They are very secretive creatures and tend to be very guarded, but they are very persuasive when they really want to be. They tend to live in secluded areas, though some choose to live in the more populated areas of cities and towns.

There really isn't a pattern with nix as far as living conditions go. They tend to be much more human with their lifestyles, it varies so greatly from one to the next.

» POWERS AND ABILITIES.

» Water Embodiement --//
They can turn into medium sized bodies of water. They pool out to fill up indentions in the earth.

» Hypnotic Voice --//
They are very skilled with entrancing people with their voices like sirens, though they are more skilled with an instrument that they enchant.

» Instrumental Glamouring --//
This is something unique to a nix. They have a special enchantment they can put on an instrument while they are playing it. It only works while they're playing it. They hypnotize people with their music and can lure them in, they can also manipulate people while they're hypnotized. The only way to break the glamour is to hypnotize them again and return them to normal.

» Hydrokinetic --//
These creatures have the ability to create and manipulate water.

» Water Breathers --//
They can breathe underwater through gills on their necks.

» Emotional Manipulation --//
They can do this while someone is under their hypnosis only. They can make someone think they love them, though the affected person will always seem confused about their feelings, reluctant to admit it. It isn't a true or pure love. People with mental blocks are immune to their music.

» WEAKNESSES.

» Magical Backlash --//
The prolonged use of their magic takes a toll on them and draws on their life forces, like sea witches. Nix don't typically live very long lives, most don't make it past mid forties or fifties. Intense magical use will also make them very tired and physically weak.

» Limited Land Time --//
They gotta have pretty frequent access to water or they dry out, get sick and eventually die.

» Water Form --//
Taking the form of a pond or lake might seem neat, but if someone were to scoop up a bucket of water out of a nix in water form it would be horrible for the nix. Depending on the part scooped out they might die, for this reason, many won't shift back until the bucket full of water is returned.

» Siren Song --//
The song of a siren will instantly entrance a nix.

» Kelpie's --//
If a Kelpie decides to make a Nix's water form body their own pond to reside by they will get extremely upset if the nix should try to shift and leave. Kelpie have been known to kill a nix over this. The two species do not particularly like one another.

» Bronze --//

SEA WITCH

poor unfortunate souls, in pain, in need!

Sea witches were once regular merfolk, but these creatures, either through their bloodline or a deal with a demon have gotten their hands on magic. They are the witches of the deep, able to tap into the same magic that the witches on land can. However, tapping into these forces seems to have an adverse affect on the merfolk. Their magic warps their appearances, and it is difficult for them to hide what they truly are. Most Sea Witches must embrace what they are, but because of this they are often - but not always - exiled from the underwater cities where other merfolk make their homes.

» APPEARANCE.

» Human --//
Like most of the Mer, Sea Witches possess a human form. However, unlike the other mer, their human forms are not as perfect and alluring. While they can create a human image and typically it is as normal as anything, they cannot maintain it for long. After sometimes as little as an hour or two, they slowly begin to shift back into their true forms, which generally means they need to find a body of water else they're left stranded on dry land with no legs.

» True Form --//
A Sea Witch's true form doesn't typically take after your run-of-the-mill Mer. They are often half-octopus or squid, and are misshapen and discoloured by the magic they use. The older the sea-witch, the more sea-ridden they are: covered in seaweed and barnacles that are just as much parts of them as their organs.

» BEHAVIOR.

» Due to their often misshapen or 'ugly' true forms, Sea Witches are known to seek seclusion: deep underwater caves or trenches where they can live in peace and practice their arts without judgement. While not all inherently evil, their magic to the Mer is considered to be demonic, and it's not uncommon for a sea witch to be banished from a Mer civilization for such a thing. This isn't to say all witches are treated this way, some stay close to the royal families or heads of communities to serve as healers or consultants, using their magic to help the others of their species.

The magic they use also draws heavily on their life force, therefore they age quickly and often die only a few decades into their lives. This is something no one has been able to work around. For whatever reason, their bodies and the magic they contain completely reject immortality. They are doomed to short lives for the gift they possess, and this is irreversible.

» POWERS AND ABILITIES.

» Hydrokinesis
Sea Witches are able to manipulate water, effecting the push and pull of currents and waves. This ability works best when they are submerged or partially-submerged in water. They can use it on dry land, but the longer they use it without returning to the water, the quicker they wear out, revert to their true forms and weaken.
» Atmokinesis
Only effective when they are in physical contact with a body of water, like the ocean, a lake or a pond, Sea Witches can manipulate the weather, bringing on storms and winds and rains.
» Telekinesis
Sea-Witches can move and lift objects with their minds. Underwater, this ability is near unmatched, as they can use their abilities in synchronicity to bring down a ship with ease. Naturally, out-of-water this becomes more draining a talent.
» Waterbreathing
Despite their magic, they are still a member of the Mer race. This means they can breathe underwater and are typically very strong swimmers. Not only that, but their octopus or squid forms mean they are dexterous and fluid in their movements. Six arms or more is better than just two.
» Crafting Affinity
Like land witches, these Mer are able to craft amulets, charms and potions to help or hurt. They often keep books upon books they retrieve from Sea-witches before them or steal from the surface that contain pages of useful spells.
» Healing
Most, if not all, are capable of some degree of healing magic, able to seal wounds or speed up a person's natural healing ability.
» Temperature-Resistance
In their search for seclusion, Sea-witches are often driven to what most Mer would consider uninhabitable. They have developed a resistance to the heat and the cold that the non-magical of their species is without. They could live comfortably in arctic waters, and being boiled alive isn't too pressing a concern for them.

» Marine Linguistics
Sea-Witches retain the ability to speak to marine animals, often taking some on as friends or familiars.

» WEAKNESSES.

» Dry Land
If it isn't obvious by now, it should be. Being out on dry land weakens a sea-witch. The longer they go out of water, the worse it gets.
» Nets
A weakness they share with other species of Mer: they are uneasy around Nets and can be reduced to an all-out panic if caught in one.
» Life-Force Magic
All of the sea-witch's magic comes from their own life-energy. They are capable of many great things, but the more they use their energy the more they wear themselves outs, and an excessive use can shorten their lifespan indefinitely.
» Knowledge-hungry
By nature, sea-witches have a very avid thirst for new information. Their drive to learn can often lead them into trouble, as the urge to discover is something they cannot always resist.
