GARGOYLES
is it safe to blink?
Gargoyles, at the heart of things, are protectors. They are stone beings of many shapes and sizes, some carved in the shape of animals while others are carved in the likeness of people. This isn't to say all stone statues are gargoyles, because it is a certain kind of ancient magic that gives the gargoyle life and strength. They are created with the intention to guard, and are fiercely loyal to the location of their perch, or the people who created or maintain it.
»CREATION
A Gargoyle can be created in one of two ways. The first, is an ancient blessing preformed by a powerful being or coven. This blessing is preformed upon a block of stone as it is carved into its shape, and infuses the stone with the magic of the creator(s). This magic then becomes the gargoyle's own, and it gives them life.
Alternatively, gargoyles themselves can multiply. Two must come together, and similar to the blessing-style creation, must carve the newcomer themselves out of stone. During this process, they both halve their energies to supply their creation with the same life they were given. However, this effects the 'parents' negatively. Their life-force is halved, and it does not regenerate. The 'birth' of a new gargoyle is the start of the 'death' of their parents. Over time ranging from weeks to years, the parents get slower and slower, shifting from stone-to-flesh gets increasingly difficult, until the gargoyles' lives are ended the night they cannot shift out of stone, whereas they return to stone creatures forever: unremarkable, cold and lifeless.
In both cases, the location where the gargoyle is created is incredibly important, because they are bound there for life. The place where they are perched when the blessing or creation is completed becomes their 'perch'.
»THE PERCH
The perch of a gargoyle is incredibly important: it is their home, their resting place, their charge to protect and their source of power. Some perches are created atop of cathedrals to protect the building, or in graveyards to watch over the dead, or in parks to keep their surroundings safe. While in the vacinity of their perch, the gargoyles are at their strongest.
Of course, they are able to wander as far as they wish, but there is a catch. They must return to their perch to 'recharge'. The magic that keeps them mobile wanes the longer they go without perching. The longer they go without returning to their perch, the weaker they get, the slower they move, and the harder it is for them to return home. Newborns typically cannot be away from their perch for more than a few nights. Older gargoyles can go longer, but there has been no record of any one gargoyle lasting over a month away from their perch.
» POWERS.
» Super Strength
Gargoyles are equipped with the strength to rival that of dragons, and the difference of power in and out of human form is marginal.
» Invulnerability
Being creatures of living stone, Gargoyles are almost impervious to damage. Their skin in human form is solid as rock, and they cannot be cut. Most damage must be done with blunt-force-trauma.
» Telepathy
This ability allows them only to communicate with thought. They are able to project their voices into other's heads, but they cannot read minds.
» Impervious to Mind-manipulation
Gargoyles are immune to several mind-manipulation abilities, this includes glamour, mind reading, pain illusion, etc.
» Extremely Pain Tolerant
Gargoyles feel next to no pain. This makes them fearsome in battle, and difficult to slow down. They are sooner to feel a strain on their bodies from energy use then they are to pain. An arm could be bashed off and they would not feel it.
» WEAKNESSES.
» Stone by Day
When the sun gets above the horizon, no matter where they are (indoors or outdoors, mid-leap or napping in a field), the gargoyle is turned to stone. They are still fairly resilient in this shape, but cannot move again or use any other power until the sun is below the horizon.
» The Perch
If they are not on their perch by dayrise, they do not regain any energy. If they were caught in a fight or otherwise using a lot of energy, this can be near-fatal, as they are constantly draining energy simply to exist. Their perch serves like a battery, they longer they go without, the weaker they get.
» Permanent Damage
There is no healing the body of a gargoyle. If a limb is lost, it's lost for good. Their scars are visible most in their true form and will never fade.
» Weight and Speed
Being stone, Gargoyles do not move quickly. They do not accelerate very well, either. They are heavy, and while this can be used as an advantage strength-wise, it makes them some of the slowest-running creatures in existance. That being said, a gargoyle that does manage to work up a charge is going to hit their target like a train.
» HUMAN FORM.
Like most other supernaturals, Gargoyles have the ability to switch between their stone form and their human form. This is to help them blend a little better with society. However, human shape does not save them from the effects of daylight. They will still turn to stone after sunrise, no matter where they are or what they are doing.
