DRAGONS
basically dinosaurs, right?
Dragons are ancient, reptilian or serpentine creatures that have been around for centuries. They come in many shapes and sizes, are typically difficult to find and difficult to kill. Because of their rarity, they are thought to be extinct by many. Those who are in the know are privy to the knowledge that parts of dragons such as teeth, claws and scales are in high demand from collectors and traders and sell for high prices. Because of that they are often hunted, and have developed means of survival over centuries.
»BEHAVIOUR.
Dragons of all kinds are typically solitary creatures, living in caves or abandoned, solid structures such as castles or watchtowers. They are adaptable creatures, and have made homes everywhere from the deep sea to the highest mountains through evolutionary changes. It is not unheard of, however, for dragons to form 'Families' or 'Weyrs'. These are groups of dragons – typically related, though sometimes not – that form a sort of 'pack' in interest of protecting one another or preserving a sense of community.
Some of them are capable of human speech vocally, though others – and this is found more in Eastern dragon myths – can communicate telepathically. Young dragons find this ability to be harder, and oftentimes focus on more animalistic forms of communication such as body language, chirps or growls.
They are typically protective by nature, driven to defend what they claim as “theirs” to the end. When cornered they can often get aggressive and hostile, and are best approached unarmed, or else prepared for a sudden attack. They are secretive and seclusive, keeping to themselves even when in families, as a method of protection and self-preservation. The best way to avoid a fight is to just not be there at all.
Due to their survivability, they can live for centuries, and are often thought to be very wise and intelligent creatures.
» ABILITIES AND MAGIC.
» Most dragons are able to breathe fire, and are extremely heat-resistant. However, there have been some cases of dragons with the opposite ability: equipped with a frost breath and a high tolerance to frigid temperatures. In extremely rare cases, typically found in the eldest of dragons, they can breathe either.
» They are extremely strong and extremely fast, easily ranking at the top of the species list for physical abilities. Their strength carries over into their human forms, and while their strength is unmatched, they are at their strongest when they are shifted.
» Dragons are extremely tolerant to blunt force
» Dragons can't have their minds read
» In their natural form, they have tough – but not impenetrable – armour or thick hides. They are typically equipped with sharp claws and teeth. Most are nocturnal, have a strong sense of smell and taste and acute hearing.
» Most – if not all – are capable of flight by some means, be it the wings of a European dragon or the magic of an eastern one.
» They are resistant to magic, but not immune to it.
» WEAKNESSES.
» Dragons are hardy and long-lived, but not immortal, and can be cut easier than they can be bruised.
» Dragons can be weakened by exposure to their opposing element. I.E, a fire-breathing dragon would feel weakened in a blizzard or extremely cold climates. A frost-breathing one would fare poorly in a desert climate. If a dragon is not adapted to their climate, they are extremely susceptible to it.
» Physically, their underbellies are unarmoured and often the target of attacks.
» They heal like any other animal, with time and proper rest. They cannot regenerate limbs, so once it is gone, it's gone.
» HUMAN FORM.
In order to blend a little more in today's day and age, most dragons have developed a very basic shape shifting ability, allowing them to assume a human form. Naturally, they are more vulnerable in this form – without their claws, teeth or armour to defend them. They are still enduring and have super-human strength, and can take a good deal of damage before having to succumb to their wounds.
For this reason, most dragons are easier to kill while in their human form, and shift back upon death. This makes keeping their existence a secret that much more important, as hunters will target them when they are in this shape and harvest from their corpses whatever they wish.
